Make children strong!

If you are disadvantaged from the outset, you have to invest a lot of energy to catch up. That is especially true of our first years at school. “Make children strong!” is a project that is organized by the social welfare organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany. It enables disadvantaged children to be given the necessary care and support at primary schools in Einbeck so that they get off to a good start. The AKB Foundation supporting this project.

Access to a good education is a key factor in the personal development of every one of us and therefore in our participation in society. However, it is not always the case that children can be equipped with the tools they need to keep up in their first years at school. And yet that is a time that is crucial to their further development. Just about all pupils are very enthusiastic when they start school. However, scenes like the following often occur: A child wants to take a worksheet out of his or her satchel, but can’t find it because everything’s in a jumble in it. While he or she is frantically searching for the sheet, the other children are already busy with the exercises. Or there are children who have just moved to Einbeck and speak hardly any German. They can’t talk with the others and withdraw into their shell.

Since 2017, the “Make children strong!" project organized by the Diakonie, the social welfare organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany, has helped pupils in the first and second grades at Einbeck’s three primary schools. The AKB Foundation has supported this project from the outset. Teachers can supervise children in small groups and in an atmosphere where there is no pressure on them to achieve and where they can play, read aloud, draw or hold conversations. However, they also provide assistance by fostering the structures the children need to learn, such as keeping their satchel tidy or arranging their worksheets in an orderly way. As a result, it is possible to give a helping hand to children who would otherwise be left behind and might not be able to catch up in their first years at school.

Four hours a week were initially allotted to the “Make children strong!” project at the schools. However, the coronavirus pandemic meant that the children had to repeatedly switch from attending school to remote learning. That meant that the school was no longer able to fulfill its function as a place for learning and social interaction. That was especially hard on children who previously had problems in keeping up with lessons. That is why the funding was increased further, also with the AKB Foundation’s support. As a result, the teachers can now supervise the children for six hours a week – and make them strong. |

The AKB Foundation

The AKB Foundation was established in 1998 by Carl-Ernst Büchting (1915–2010), the long-standing Chairman of the Executive Board and later of the Supervisory Board at KWS. Its work centers on the Southern Lower Saxony region, specifically Einbeck, and on Klein Wanzleben (Saxony-Anhalt), the place where KWS was founded. The foundation’s values are steeped in the concepts of sustainability, humanity and future viability. The foundation promotes charitable goals and offers funding in five categories: “the church, Christian faith and ecumenism,” “art and culture,” “education and social welfare,” “science and research,” and “protection of the environment, countryside and nature.” More information: www.akb-stiftung.de |
