New vehicle for the company fire brigade
The water tank in the truck of our company fire brigade in Einbeck proved to be too small. Our colleagues now have a new fire engine – with three times the capacity.
Symbolic handover of the keys: Board member Eva Kienle and Helmut Böttcher, head of the Company Disaster Protection Organization and works fire chief, are both delighted about the new fire truck.
Why does the company fire brigade need an additional truck? The fire in the LEO greenhouse in October 2018 prompted serious considerations. The existing squad engine could carry just 800 liters of water – and that was soon used up in fighting the fire. A supply of water to Grimsehlstraße first had to be established, and Einbeck’s volunteer fire brigade arrived at the scene, bringing water with further engines.
However, the fire broke out at 9:30 in the morning. After being alerted, these support forces first had to get to the fire station in Einbeck from work or their home. That cost time.
The company fire brigade quickly reached the greenhouse with enough personnel. Once the tank was empty, it tried to at least continue fighting the fire at the same time as coupling up garden hoses to transport water. Some managers who had rushed to the scene asked: “What, you’ve run out of water?”
Expansion of the headquarters in Einbeck under the PIA project, the new warehouses 7 and 8, Biotechnology Center 2, and the new data center, as well as future planning, led us to consider whether to acquire a new truck. However, the responsible supervisory authority – Göttingen Police Directorate – also officially defined stricter safety and protection objectives for the works at Grimsehlstraße and Allensteiner Straße in Einbeck.
That meant we had to start planning for the new vehicle. Tobias Brackmann headed a project group made up of Uwe Kunert, Matthias Weger, Chris Preuß and Helmut Böttcher. They submitted the necessary applications and discussed what specialist equipment was required to meet the safety and protection objectives on the campus. They convinced the key decision-makers that a new truck was a must. Our thanks go to the Executive Board for its farsightedness in supporting this project.
The project group selected a truck with a chassis from MAN and a fire-fighting superstructure from the company Rosenbauer. The official name is HLF 20. That means the truck has a permanently installed pump, a water tank that can hold 2,400 liters, and a 125-liter foam tank. There is also fire-fighting and first-aid equipment.
Along with the 15-year-old squad truck, the company fire brigade now has more than 3,200 liters of water on board and is well equipped to tackle potential hazards on the campus. The investments will help fight and prevent fires, protect the environment and provide aid and assistance in many areas on the company campus, ensuring that quick and expert help can be provided. |
