Farewell

Günter Seitz

Globetrotter

Günter Seitz has worked on four continents in almost 25 years at KWS, and now the head of our oilseed and tropical corn breeding has retired. His responsibilities are being taken over by two successors.

Günter Seitz describes himself as a very active person. “Not someone who typically puts down strong roots,” as he says. So it was that after six years as an assistant at the prestigious University of Hohenheim, the Swabian gave up his academic career and moved to the U.S. in 1996 to join a commercial seed company. In 1999 he joined Great Lakes Hybrids with the task of merging the breeding programs of KWS and Limagrain that gave rise to the joint venture of AgReliant – a “competitive company that went from being insignificant to number three in corn seed in the U.S. within eight years.”

From zero to third place

He enjoyed similar success in Brazil: KWS launched its operations there in 2012 and, after 10 years, is now third in the most important market for tropical corn. What started with a team of one breeder and two employees is now a breeding program with a 120-strong workforce.

The plans for our China business were pointed in a similar direction. The country was actually his cup of tea. “Overall, I devoted most of my time to the China program, but it’s not easy to gain a foothold there,” says Günter Seitz, adding that market access is difficult for foreign companies, in part because the government requires them to obtain licenses for domestically developed transgenes in corn breeding.

Time with the family

Today, Günter Seitz can look back on almost 25 years at KWS and has prepared his departure well with two successors. “The strength of both of them is that, in addition to their excellent expertise, they are very dedicated and enthusiastic,” he says of Lisa-Marie Braune and Leandro Vagno de Souza (see “About”).

And Günter Seitz himself? He is now looking forward to “spending time with my family – four children and five grandchildren. I’ve been on the move a lot in the past 10 years, now I want to step on the brakes for a while and slow the pace of my life down. And then I’ll see how I come to terms with that.” There is already no shortage of inquiries from people asking if he has time for them. |

About

Lisa-Marie Braune got to know Günter Seitz during her internship at AgReliant while studying in Hohenheim and went to the U.S. in 2011 as a PhD student at the University of Minnesota, where she did her dissertation on genomic selection in collaboration with AgReliant under supervision of Prof. Rex Bernardo. She was responsible for the corn breeding activities in China and is now in charge of the oilseed crops oilseed rape and sunflower. While oilseed rape is already successfully established on many European markets, sunflower is still in its infancy – meaning there are two quite different challenges facing her. |

Leandro Vagno de Souza hails from Brazil and is taking charge of tropical corn in his home country. His challenge will be to maintain KWS’ outstanding position in a rapidly evolving market dominated by competitors with much larger resources. Günter Seitz regards the qualified breeder to be ideally suited, also thanks to his experience as head of research at Dow-Agrosciences and LongPing High-Tech. |
