Art meets Science

Pretty as a picture

There’s so much art in science! As David Pacheco Villalobos, Susana Martin-Ortigosa and Christina Rode have discovered for years in their research. “They identify so closely with their work that they wanted to share their observations,” says our art expert Bettina Alex. The scientists therefore called on their research colleagues to submit unusual motifs. The upshot: 200 mysterious photos, graphics and microscope images (photo: bombardment of a wheat embryo) that now adorn the walls of Einbeck’s new laboratory building, BioTechnikum 2. |

The artist and photographer Volker Crone and curator Elmas Şenol share their impressions of the “Art meets Science” exhibition. All the photos can be seen in this catalogue.

KWS Ukraine supports animal rehabilitation

A second chance: The former animal trainer Sergiy Paljokhin looks after more than 160 animals from 30 species at a rehabilitation center in Chmelnyzkyj, Western Ukraine. What makes the small zoo so special is that the animals used to work in a circus. The story began in 2016 when a circus retired a lion because of old age. It was later joined by a brown bear, llamas and more and more animals – all with a pretty sad fate. Since then, people in the region have been able to observe the wild animals, who now live under far better conditions. When our colleagues at KWS Ukraine learned about the project, they spontaneously donated ten tons of corn as feed. |

Design digital appointments visually with Mural

The current pandemic has changed the way we work together. Workshops and brainstorming sessions can no longer be conducted face-to-face. However, to ensure that they can be conducted virtually and successfully, the new "Mural" tool was introduced at KWS in April 2020. The digital whiteboard is easy to use and many workshop and creative methods can be used. As in face-to-face meetings, participants can use post-its and record their key points. |

SAP S/4 HANA helps KWS grow

When a company is growing like KWS, that’s a good sign. However, as KWS gets larger, it also becomes more complex: More employees have to get paid on time, additional orders must be processed, and more and more production processes need to be controlled. KWS will soon run up against limitations with isolated solutions that exist alongside each other. The future lies in our digital processes worldwide being unified and seamless. That goal is therefore a key component of our Strategic Planning.

The SAP S/4 HANA platform will help deliver standardized processes throughout the group. Its rollout is an enormous project: Ultimately, the new solution will link together all companies with a common database, enabling data from every country and Business Unit to be called up at the touch of a key. That ensures controlling of our company is error-free, transparent and far less time-consuming.

KWS UK is blazing the way and has used SAP S/4 HANA since 2019. Further KWS companies will be integrated gradually in the platform, and we expect all processes at KWS to be run on it by 2027 – meaning we will have one standardized solution that can be called up right away at all our locations worldwide. |

Special issue on rye

There’s been a lot of talk about rye recently. Its cultivation area has also increased sharply. That has prompted the magazine “top agrar” to publish a new “Hybrid Rye Special.” Experts shed light on agricultural topics and the use of rye as feed. The overview is rounded out by practitioners reporting on their experience.

KWS Cereals has supported the special edition. When “top agrar” devotes such attention to a crop, it’s also a powerful signal to the farming industry. Hybrid rye is simply in keeping with our times.

The “Hybrid Rye Special” is available in German, English and Polish. |

KWS surfing tip

If you don’t know what department is behind an acronym, you can find an explanation by searching in the Microsoft application DELVE. When you enter GMC-EPC, for example, the software shows all our colleagues who are in the department. You are then shown its precise name if you click on any of the profiles. The more up-to-date and detailed our profiles are, the easier it is for all colleagues to find out what a department’s expertise, focal areas of work and responsibilities are.

An additional tip: Up-to-date organizational charts can be generated using the tool Ingentis, which you can find by clicking on the button “More Applications” on the intranet’s homepage: Click on the department, define the depth of detail, create a chart – done. |
