Training

Winning young talents

“Employers need to stay on the ball”

How do we find talents for training? A look behind the scenes with Yvonne Knaak-Schweiß, chief training coordinator and head of training for business administration vocations at KWS.

What does a training coordinator do?

I coordinate training for KWS in Germany for business administration, industrial/technical and agricultural/technical vocations and the dual study program. I work closely with all heads of training in the other departments, advise trainees and provide support on career paths or development alternatives. A particularly exciting aspect at the moment is employer branding. Especially in times where there is a shortage of skilled workers, it’s important to present yourself to Generation Z as an attractive and modern company that offers training. I therefore plan career events or job fairs at which KWS is active and manage projects to increase our attractiveness as an employer, such as visits to schools and universities in the region.

Employer attractiveness is an important issue. What is currently changing in training?

As an employer, we need to stay on the ball in order to motivate young people to apply to our company. That’s why it’s now even more important to keep on involving trainees in campaigns or projects. In that way, we create trust, loyalty and satisfaction and have a chance to retain future skilled staff at KWS after they complete their training. Generation Z believes that genuine sustainability, personal transparency and digital mobility, for example, are a must in any job package – and we have to take that into account as an employer.

How do we at KWS keep pace with the changes?

Our trainees are given responsibility in various projects and grow with their tasks. We also strengthen the team structure by holding team events across all the training vocations. In June, KWS was certified as a top trainer by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. As part of that, a jury scrutinized how we rate in terms of onboarding, organization, completion of training, personnel development, training marketing and recruiting. We’re proud of this accolade, as it proves that we offer above-average training. We also have a presence on various platforms and provide information in a number of ways – for example with our Training Evening. A good, neat and well-maintained website and regular posts on social media, such as Instagram, are also important to us. They are media that people use everyday!

Why should young people choose KWS as a place to train?

Our slogan “Make yourself grow” is truly lived at KWS. Our trainees can unfold their abilities individually, and KWS’ values of “closeness, reliability, foresight and independence” are also reflected in our training and dual study programs. There’s a buddy program, for example, to support newcomers. Trainees also have the opportunity to gain further qualifications after completing their training, such as a university degree, a master’s in plant technology, or the title of master craftsperson or technician in the industrial/technical field. |
