Global Template Releases, adding one layer per business year until 2028

The Onion approach

The progression of S/4 Integrated Flow follows the structure of an onion: Each new step – also called a software version – is represented by a layer to the onion.

The innermost part of the onion includes the core functionalities, with each subsequent layer bringing in additional, specialized features and modules, such as transport management in the Romania go-live. During each implementation, new insights and experiences are collected, which can be applied to benefit future versions.

With this approach, we gain the ability to minimize disruption when implementing functionalities on ongoing KWS business processes. Furthermore, it allows us to accommodate specific requirements and still maintain a harmonized, global template.

The S/4 Integrated Flow transformation aims to standardize our processes and data across KWS, by harnessing the capabilities of SAP S/4 HANA. It will support our strategic initiatives and day-to-day business in its entire range, from seed production to digital sales.

The transformation entails a stepwise deployment of new features to operational processes over the course of several years. Romania is starting with Global Template Version 0.7, which includes a number of new functions. Notably, the inclusion of the SAP "Transport Management" application enables real-time connectivity with transport companies, marking a significant simplification of our logistics operations. Furthermore, version 0.7 links functions related to procurement and invoice release as well as integrated sales planning, production and seed processing.

The new scanner solution facilitates work in the warehouse and during transport.

“I am delighted that the headquarters chose Romania to implement this project and that it trusted our colleagues to test and implement S/4. Thus, KWS demonstrates a full digital interface approach in all processes and especially toward the company's clients,” says Robert Tuica, who is responsible for logistics management in Romania.

Behind each successful go-live is effective planning and intense collaboration between Global IT, the country teams, business units and many more important stakeholders.

The next layer to the onion will be added with the transition for Scandinavia and Serbia. You can read more about the world of transport management in the next issue of insideKWS.
